I have a 1995 f150 with the speed density unit and a 351w. The truck runs great. I have been throwing around the idea of adding some ponies and did some looking on this forum and found if I want to keep my motor internals the same that the best route would be to add lont tube headers, exhaust and cam. What I dont know about is which cam to get as I do not want it to run or idle rough because it idles good now. Also I like the idea of the truck being quiet. I know this sounds stupid but I would like to add power without adding noise. Although a little is acceptable. I am looking for cam recomendations or experiences with this motor and header suggestions.
thanks guys
The air charger kit he is talking about is for the air filter, sounds like you thought it was something else from your reaction. You certainly don't need to convert to MASS AIR for an air filer. I operated my truck with the air filter he is talking about for years and I have an SD kit (kind of).
I also had a bolt on supercharger on the same truck with the same motor. I am just now converting to MASS AIR because I am building a new motor. To answer the rest of your first post, if you put in a new cam you will need to go to MASS AIR - if you want the cam you describe. There is a very narrow window SD can handle, and I don't know from experience but I remember reading you can't even replace the cam with SD.
I didn't notice much from my air filter kit although I do like it. Headers, bolt on shorty, were a good add. Supercharger is always fun.
The 5.0HO cam is what you want.. it's very similar to the cam in the motor now but with more intake duaraion and lift and that will broaden the powerband without affecting idle quality. You could also add 1.7 rockers for a bit more.

Sorry for my ignorance but how will adding rocker arms add more hp. Also I did a little searching and saw that comp cams makes has quite a few choices for this motor. Would it be better to go with something from them and if I did I dont know which type of cam to get? Is this 5.0 HO cam you speak of from a mustang? And where to get one?
The KN intake kit is a piece of junk. Its a waste of money that just inhales hot underhood air. I had one for a while, and it doesn't seal up at the throttle body on the MAF kit either. My fuel economy went down too. If you want a real CAI, just get the I6/460 air tube that goes from the air box to the radiator support instead of on top of it.
I think the HO mustang cam is a good choice to , you can usally find them on craigs list , by changing from 1.6 ratio rockers to 1.7 gives the cam more lift & will work fine on SD.....Lew
Ok, thanks for the advice so far guys I appreciate it. Which years of mustang cam are we talking here or doesnt it matter just as long as its a 5.0 HO? I am new to putting a cam in a motor so please be patient fellas. So that cam with new rocker arms how much hp. do you guys think realistically. I would also like some recommendations for an exhaust setup that is not loud but i would like to make power? Might be impossible (I dont know) because I know that long tube headers are the way to go with my current completely stock setup. Then with the addition of a freed up exhaust and cam how much power is feasible?
Thanks for the info,
Jay
Without dipping into cylinder heads you're putting a +10% realistic ceiling on what power there is to gain. For a stock 351W, I think a great cam and less restrictive exhaust should be up to 25 HP. Most of the airflow restriction in an engine happens in the head. The 1.7 rockers are the easiest way to open up to more power.
Long tube headers are definitely the way to go, and you're going to have to go deep into the catalogue of worthy mufflers to find one that makes significantly better power without being loud. You can have your tailpipe turn-down after the axle for better sound diffusion, should take off a few dB's.
The turndown under the bed is not good for sound at all. It makes it resonate in the cab more. It doesn't matter if the exhaust is loud or quiet, it sounds somewhat like a dump truck then.
A large Magnaflow or Gibson muffler should be fairly quiet and flow good.

I went from the stock muffler to a Flowmaster 50 with a turndown and it sounded exactly the same. Resonance would have a lot to do with the length of pipes, all else being the same. Maybe I just got lucky and the length was just right.
