Have had some trouble lately with the oil pressure gauge on an '89 2.3L. The gauge always read right in the middle, between the R and M on the word "NORMAL". Now occasionally the needle slides down around the O or the N on "NORMAL" and will stay there for a while. Is this an actual decrease in oil pressure? I always thought that this was a dummy gauge since the needle never moved, and that it would read right in the middle until oil pressure got dangerously low, then go to low. Don't know if my pressure is getting a little low or if the gauge is just acting funny.
The gauge on your truck is an idiot gauge it will read 1/2 scale even if it only has 5-7 lbs pressure. They are just a switch going to ground. I would check the connection to the sender on the block and/or swap out the sender. This condition can also be caused by voltage fluxuations in the trucks electrical system. Also check yor trucks grounds and make sure they are good.
If you suspect grounding problems, try using a good set of heavy gauge low resistance jumper cables to parallel connect along the B- cable & the engine block, maybe to the body too, if suspect it's battery to ground or body to engine grounds. Just make sure the parallel connection spots are squeeky clean & bright to bare metal, so you get a good connection.
If the problem clears, suspect the battery to engine ground cable or it's connections at the battery or engine & this would include the cable end connector lugs where the cable wire connects to them.
If that checks out ok, maybe look to the op sensor/switch, for lose, or corroded connections, or a faulty sensor, as has been suggested.
More thoughts for consideration.
