cheap mods

I am looking to start modding my 96 psd but don't know were to start and I would like to be mor3 mechanially inclined. First can someone explain the 10k mod and what it does? I also hear that gauges are almost a need to keep a eye in things, how much do they cost? I would like to put a 5in stack and a ts 6 pos chip before June hits but don't really know were to start.

Thanks
Griz

Buy gages!

If you look into the history, go back pages and look at all the post about mods, cheap mods, more mods, where do I start mod, etc. You'll see EVERY TIME the experts here say to BUY A SET OF GAGES FIRST! They only say that so you don't burn up - blow up your wonderful 7.3 !!!!!

Me, I'm no expert but I got plans for Gages!

Also I guess, from reading on here, the 1st 2 mods to do are replace the DownPipe and do the aftermarket 6637 intake.

Where to get gages? I am not sure, I am sure the experts will point you in the right direction.

You can read the Thread - 'tons of pm's on my 10k' and you should get a better understanding of how the 10K mod works.

Ok well first things first. Gauges are in fact very important and can be had at a numerous amount of online vendors. Complete Performance Give them a call and ask for Paul, he would have no issues getting you set up, he has done it for me alot.

Here is the usual steps to take when you first start moddin your truck. Gauges, air intake (6637 or donaldson filter with a 45* pipe coming out of it to replace your stock air intake), then you want to do a 3" downpipe at the very least but a 4" exhaust isn't a bad idea either. By doing those two mods your letting your truck breathe and it will make a world of difference.

Now as for the 10k mod. If you plan on buying a chip, you dont need the 10k. That is for a cheap mod if you dont have a chip. A chip will do the same thing as the 10k and you will want to take out the 10k if you get a chip. Catch my drift? So IMO, i would just wait until you get your chip. Also if you have a auto tranny, you need to keep in mind that those are a weak link from the factory and dont like added power. You will need to do some mods to keep that happy. If its a manual you will want an upgraded clutch sooner or later. So those are the basic things and then after that you can start doing things like chip, injectors, turbo, intercooler, big oil, electric fuel... the list goes on and on. This will get addicting my friend so good luck.

Does anyone know the HP gain, measured, and the cost/HP of these mods? I havent done anything to mine except the Air intake and get 16 MPG between N VA and OKC when I go. For a 2 MPG gain to be cost effective you'd have to run a lot of miles just to pay for it. Now after adding the power, will the old trannnie hold up? Mine, after buying new tires and the air intake went out pulling a boat to Denver costing me $2300.00 in Denver plus a day travel, 750 miles and motel. This all went down at 150,000 miles and I was'nt happy.

your MPG just depends on the individual truck, your driving style, and the quality of fuel you end up getting.

I can get 15mpg with winter fuel, but with summer fuel driving about 60mph all highway i've gotten 22mpg.

After 1.9 million miles driving and having an A & P liscense I know about fuels but as far as mileage I have driven my truck 60 MPH, and 75 MPH, gets the same mileage either way and I only fuel at flying J and have run 20,000 miles and over on their fule without clogging a fuel filter or finding water in the fuel.

I get 16-17 with 75% highway driving.

Like i said earlier, these tranny's are a weak link. My uncles father inlaw's 01 Stroker just puked a tranny at 70k miles. Now when you got that tranny rebuilt, did you do any upgrades like a triple disk tc or upgraded valve body or shift kit? If not then you will need to do that before trying to add power. Cuz if you didnt upgrade it, you basically have another stock tranny which dont like more power. I wouldn't necessarily blame buyin new tires and adding an air intake on your tranny giving up. it was just time. 150k is about time for a tranny to give up without doing any work to it. The PO for my truck rebuilt at 160k.

That link didn't work And it looks like its just a basic ts chip, I would have one of the top tuners burn their custom tunes that work miracles for our trucks onto your chip. Just an idea. Someone like TW, PHP, or beans, or swamps. They deal with our trucks everyday and can give you more than a standard ts tune. They can also build around mods you already have or plan to have.

YES! TS chips are good. I'm just saying that someday you might want to check out any of the custom tuners that i mentioned in my last post and have one of those guys put their tunes on your chip. They will be a much better match for your truck than basic ts tunes.
