Got a 1992 ranger in great shape body wise, but has blown engine. ITs got the 2.3 with the 8 plugs and 5 speed tranny. I got 2 other rangers a 1987 thats got a 2.3 with distributor and man trans. then i got a 1989 thats got the 2.9 with auto trans. Both trucks bodys are ragged out and rusted pretty bad. The 2.3 should bolt right up in place of mine. But my question is how am i going to get my iginition all to work. Also will the 2.9 swap over pretty easy to the 1992 with the 2.3. any information would be greatly appreciated.
Use the '87, and leave the distributor there as a decoration [actually, it will drive the oil pump], using the '92 electronics to fire the engine. You could actually swap heads, to leave the induction & exhaust systems as original.
At the cost of a head gasket, and cam cover gasket, you can put in a new timing belt while you have it apart and know when it was done so you don't have that question in the future.
I think that is the quickest and easiest swap to do.
The 2.9 involves a lot of linkage, mount, exhaust, etc changes, which are avoided by the 2.3 change.

Reason: grammar
Disconnect all applicable wires. Remove engine from 92. Remove head from 92 engine. Remove head from 87 engine. Replace 92 head on 87 engine. Place 87 engine in 92 truck. Connect all previously disconnected stuff. Drive away.
If I understand, the 92 engine doesn't work, but the head is OK. It has 8 plugs, wires, distributorless ignition, injectors, all that stuff on the head. Plus a few connections, such as the oil pressure sending unit, to the block. Those few are likely the same, or the senders can be swapped, so you can use the 87 short block. If you use the 92 head, you can re-use all the 92 electronics, injectors, etc, as a plug-n-play replacement.

Well what happened i was driving down road. Started rattling really bad next thing i know somthing flew out from under the truck lost all oil pressure over headed. but still starts and runs but no power what so ever. But i will say that 92 lost oil pressure and the valves started rattling and i put a new oil pump in and it stoped rattlling. Before it blew it started rattling agiain with oil pressure.
