Converting 2wd to 4wd
I recently aquired a very nice solid 2wd 1965 f100 base model,it has an upgraded 302 and C6 super solid with crazy patina.
I also aquired seperately a Custom Cab LWB 1964 4x4 f100 292, Granny 4 speed body cab is shot, bed shot fenders hood shot it was built in San Jose looks like a High boy optional SW gauges temp/ oil pressure.
From my research have had a difficult time finding a singular diffinitive set of information about converting my 2wd to the 4x4 using my stock swb frame.
From what I understand the frames are completely deffirent , the two options we will pursue is remove all sheet metal off chassis and shorten the LWB frame by 14" and then install the 65 Sheet metal on the 64 chassis.
Will the 1964 4x4 front suspension bolt directly onto the 1965 2wd frame this assumes we have removed all of the 2wd chassis parts...
Questions i need answers for:
1). Will the cab bolt dirreclty to the 4x4 frame perfectly or do we have to modify cab mounts on frame or cab?
2). When you remove the 14" from the frame this is the section under tha cab?
3). How do you remove the entire STEEL dash assembly from the 1964 and weld it into the 65, reason is it ia a custom cab with lots of extra features.
4). anyone performed this conversion before and can you priovide me with some instructions and tips/ tricks.
4). Will the front sheetmetal, and bed bolt directly onto the 64 frame without modifications?
5). Anyone have a template of where to cut the frame and measurements?
We start the disassembly this weekend.
Thanks for your help.
I would tend to initially look toward a 1966 F100 4x4 or later front end that would also use the twin I-beams and coil springs. Would be a better ride. But, then the front coil spring mounts are taller/higher so some rework would need to be done on the 2WD frame to make it work. A donor truck might be a way to get everything you'd need.
The cab mounts, core support and inner fenders (aprons) are quite a bit different between the two years also, so swapping sheetmetal isn't a perfect solution. But, I never say "Never" so anything could be possible with enough time, effort and money.
Hoods, doors, gas tank and front (outer) fenders are more bolt hole compatible than the cab, core support and aprons.
Easiest way I see is to use your '65 frame, swap front X members(or fab new), and adapt the '64 front suspension and transfer case. Still would be a ton of fab work....
I would really consider fixing up the 64 long bed 4x4 but finding a 64 custom cab body and solid long wheel base bed is next to impossible around Jacksonville florida.
My 65 is super solid new floor pans other than that solid rockers and sheet metal that is why I wanted to swap cab and front clip.
