Go to pirate 4x4. There are a few guys that have built a "poor mans dana 60". Btw the 79 f350 has a lot beefier axle under it. It should have a king pin high pinion 60. One of the stoutest axles in a pickup truck for the front.
The 79 axle was the king of its day but : the inner axles (long sides) neck down in the center under 1.50" but are still 35 spline. the outer stubs however are only 30 spline 1.31" I belive. also has small 1/2" wheel studs. Also Driver side knucke was prone to cracking.
The strongest front axle by far is the 2005-up Dana 60 and DanaSuper 60 (4.30 ratio) for too many reasons to list.
I'd call it a selectable "positive" 1 or 2 wheel drive. By "positive", I mean absolutely directly coupled to transmission output.
Which beats the heck out of stock, which is 0 wheel drive in some situations. Just last weekend I was trying to get up to an old mine in Nevada. Had to cross a creek (with pretty steep banks) at an angle and ended up unable to move with the left front and right rear wheels up in the air, both spinning merrily away. That's the big annoyance with open or LSD axles. When one wheel is unloaded, you're stuck.
Some judicious use of brakes got the factory LSD to transfer just enough torque to the left rear to get me out.
I was hoping the financial situation (and parts availability) would allow me to put a selectable locker up front, but I may need to fire up the Miller!
