Ok, I have a 05 f350 Lariat with the 6.0 had it for bout a year and a half. It's been nothing but one thing after another(egr coolers, head gaskets, glow plugs you get the pic) Now I've got this weird thing I guess you could call it a shudder going on in overdrive and have searched the posts. I have tried every trans additive known to man(always draining some no overfill) so at this point its probably all additive by now and still shuddering. After reading posts on flushing the trans or dropping the pan, changing filter, not changing.......Im about as confused as you can get. Can someone please help me out here? Not sure what tranny is in it, its all stock so someone probably knows whats in there better than I, it's got 145,000 on it, had the trans serviced by ford before it was shuddering at about 130,000 shudder started at about 143,000
I have the v10 and had the tranny flushed. Changed fluid and then a couple weeks later they do it again to get the fluid out they didnt get the first time. Never had a shudder but diesel tranny is different.
Your truck has a Torqshift 5R110. An excellent transmission.
It requires a specific trans fluid. Originally Mercon SP, but now has been replaced by Mercon LV. You should not use anything else, and I would not use any additives either.
I would definitely get it flushed since at this point you don't have a positive ID on what is in it. It has to be done with a special machine that heats the transmission fluid. I think a Ford dealership is your best bet, but be sure and ask them to be certain they will use the heated machine (some don't, most do). Also make sure they change the external filter. Some include it, some don't. You can expect to pay between $150-$200 for this service. If it is much less than that, they are cutting a corner somewhere.
So, are you certain the shudder is the transmission?
Thanks for replying.... I belive you would call it a shudder. This is my first diesel so everything is pretty new to me. If it was a gasser I would almost call it a bad miss. Between 50 and 70mph in overdrive with maybe a slight grade it will chug or shudder sometimes so bad that once I had a can of soda in the cup holder and it was splashing out of the top. If it's in tow/haul it dosent do it, if you step on it and kick it down it stops. It dosent do it all of the time and the degree it does it varies as well. I even bought an Auto Enginuity scanner to check for codes or whatever...no codes, it says theres no misfires, while monitoring the transmission with it, I don't see the tcc lock up going in and out so I'm kinda at a loss. I keep reading about this truck having torque converter problems so thats where I'm leaning, but again, first diesel so......any thoughts?
Yeah, I agree, I was thinking of having it flushed but then I have people telling me that it's a bad idea and that it will knock stuff loose and cause more damage. As for the injector being bad, electricly they are showing fine on the AE with no faults but I guess it wouldn't be able to tell me if it was clogged. Forgive me if I ask dumb questions but wouldn't a bad injector be consistantly bad throughout the power range? I have used the AE to shut the injectors down one at a time and none of them being shut down re-creates the symptoms. Thanks again for your input.
