In the process of restoring my '96 XLT, I'm gonna need another bed. Wheel well rust has started and I found a bed about 90 miles away for dirt cheap-no rust! Problem is, how would I transport this back? I don't think an 8' bed will fit in my 8' bed. Anyone have any ideas? I'd really rather not rent a trailer...
Roger
Roger, cut yourself some pieces of 2"x2" lumber, and stick those in the stake pockets in your existing bed - they will sink several inches in, and you want them to stick out by about the same amount. Then go to pick up your new bed - before you load it on the truck you flip it upside down and slide its stake pockets right onto the stakes you cut earlier - this will secure the bed fore-aft and side to side rather nice. Then just run some ratchet straps over it to keep it from bouncing up and down and potentially jumping off the stakes, and drive home.
