I recently had my truck up on my friend's lift to do the transmission transplant...while under there, I got to see a lot of things I normally don't see..namely rust on my frame! What I want to do is remove the bed from the truck, '96 F250 5.8 4x4 , and sand and strip the frame and coat is with a rust resistant pant (POR-15?) What is involved in removing the bed? I've heard its either 6 or 4 bolts, all located on the bed floor, I presume? Any suggestions as to what to paint onto the frame itself? There is no rust-thru at all, just crusty type rust which doesn't look too good! The rear shackle mounts are especially rusty and I might just replace them while the bed is off. Any opinions or input would be appreciated...

Six bolts is what I took off on my '94 F350 w/8' bed... Came out with no heat needed even though truck had been pretty abused and left outside pretty much it's entire life. I scraped off what was crusty and ugly but didn't go so far as you propose because my truck will always be, and stay, ugly. I should have done the shackle mounts then too - much easier when the bed is off so be sure to check the shackles and mounts on both sides, they are prone to rust...
