Finally Got it running

Well today I finally fired up my 390. It is the first engine I have rebuilt, and it took most of my summer earnings just to build it, so you can imagine my relief when it fired up almost without a hitch, the only hitch was it seemed to run really hot, about 210-220 for the whole 20 minute run in is that normal.

I have had the same problem, sometimes it is an air pocket in the cooling system, what most people do not understand is that with a new engine tollerences are very tight. A new engine usually runs hotter, uses more gas and produces less horsepower than a broke in, good running, or looser runing engine. I have loosened the upper heater hose line and sort of burped the air out of it. Hope that helps.

Congrats.. like he said they will tend to run hot for a bit. I always leave the radiator cap off and keep the radiator clear full until water starts flowing. Air pockets suck becasue you sometimes will get no flow plus no water around the temp sensor and it will show cold on the needle at 300 degrees.
