1996 f150

my truck is an automatic but at low rpms in drive and overdrive it kinda surges its something to do with the trans. it acts like a vehicle that has a cam and a manual transmission would do at lower rpms if that make sense, it is a 1996 f150 4X4 with a 302. you guys have any ideas what it is and how to fix the problem
