Catalytic Converter

I have a 2008 Gas F250. It has 56,000 miles. The Catalytic Converters are knocking loudly, so I bring it to the dealership, and they tell me its not covered under my "PLATINUM" extended warranty and that it is gonna cost over 2000 dollars.

Any advice on what to do???

I had a tire problem/question on here a while back, and you guys saved me much money and time. Thanks for the help!!!

It happened to me at 13,000 miles

The same thing happened to me at 13,000 miles. but they replaced it under warranty. I havent looked at the manual but I thought emissions equipment was warrantied for longer than 50,000 miles. Anyway, we never found the exact cause but so far 26,434 on it and no problems yet. I've been towing a 9000 lb (loaded) travel trailer since 1000 miles.

Too heavy???

They said it is NOT covered, because the truck is over 8000 pounds??? Sounds like crap to me, but I'm a carpenter, not a mechanic!

Take the vehicle empty with 1/4 tank of gas to a public scale and have it weighed. I think Ford picks and chooses what it will pay for.

EPA guidelines state that OBD-II equipped vehicles are covered for 8 years/80,000 miles. Up till 2004, vehicles over 8600 lbs GVW were excluded, but after that, they were required to conform to OBD-II requirements, which I would suspect would also mean the warranty should be extended. I do not recall seeing any weight based exclusions, it only stated OBD-II equipped. If in doubt, check your owners manual, it should clearly state what is covered and for how long.

Make sure the guys at the muffler shop get a converter for vehicles over 8000lbs because if they put in one from a 1/2 ton truck it will probably plug up again, especially if you tow a lot. My GVW is 9400 (2009 f250 5.4 auto c.c. 4x4 w/camper package) according to the sticker on the door.

Your 2008 Warranty Guide can be downloaded in PDF format here:

http://www.motorcraftservice.com/pub.../08frdwa3e.pdf

Here is a quote:

EMISSIONS DEFECT WARRANTY COVERAGE

During the warranty coverage period, Ford Motor Company warrants
that:

• your vehicle or engine is designed, built, and equipped to meet - at
the time it is sold - the emissions regulations of the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA).

• your vehicle or engine is free from defects in factory-supplied materials
or workmanship that could prevent it from conforming with applicable
EPA regulations.

• you will not be charged for diagnosis, repair, replacement, or adjustment
of defective emissions-related parts listed under What is Covered?
on pages 20-21.

The warranty coverage period for:

• Passenger cars, light duty trucks (vehicles with a GVWR of 8,500
pounds or less)

— 8 years or 80,000 miles (whichever occurs first) for catalytic converter,
onboard emissions diagnostic device, natural gas vehicle (NGV)
module (Bi-fuel/CNG), electronic emission control unit, and transmission
control module;
— 3 years or 36,000 miles (whichever occurs first) for all other covered
parts.

• Heavy duty vehicles (vehicles with a gross vehicle weight over 8,500
pounds)

— 5 years or 100,000 miles (whichever occurs first) for covered diesel
engine parts;

— 5 years or 50,000 miles (whichever occurs first) for all other covered
parts.

See WHAT IS COVERED for list of covered parts.

Thanks!!!

Thanks JKBRAD, and others,

I read your older post, and I have been in touch with Ford warranty department. They said they would be in touch with my dealership, and that they are supposed to contact me within 4 days with any further info. She stated that it would be a Ford decision, not the dealership???? I don't know , but it sounded as if they would work with me, We'll see.

I'll post followups as soon as I hear.

Thanks All,
Tommy

I honestly think Ford had a problem with the cats on early '08 gassers. The original part number has been superseded by a new one.
