are you serious? really? hold on let me put three shelves and some hardware in the smart and try to put two refrigerator boxes and a pre assembled table into the back of the hummer and call it a fair game. to make it even more fair we are going to pair up the chick with lord humongous.

you could have fit that into a little red wagon.

No need for name calling here.

I agree the second video was rigged in a pretty bad way. They picked the largest vehicle with the WORST configuration to load bulky items in. This would NOT be the case with any SD.

But the crash test is kind of neat to watch! So many insist that something that small has to be made entirely of plastic and must fold like a tin can in an accident. I've seen this video before, and the results are impressive! In this type of accident you better pray you're not in a SD when you hit something at 70 MPH! There would be very little left of the SD, and the passenger compartment would resemble an accordion.

This is exactly what I was talking about earlier, well designed unibody cars are much safer than most people think! Especially most truck enthusiasts!

All other things aside, like fuel economy, being green (which is a good thing, except when overdone) and a few other things...

What happens to the human body when you're driving in a 1000 lbs vehicle that abruptly hits something much heavier? Air bags, crumple zones, you name it.

The number of G's that the human body can take is well documented.

When a light little car hits something much heavier, the vehicle stops VERY quick and subjects the body to a huge number of G's.

Heavier car, less G's of deceleration.

Which is why I still own my '97 Cougar - 4K+ lbs of steel protecting my wife and kids.

The only time the "Smart Car" is "smart" is when it's surrounded by similar vehicles.

Otherwise, it's just "dumb".

Some food for though on the big vs small issue. My better half was t-bone about 3 weeks ago on the drivers door of her 2000 crown vic.

Motorcyle hit her at around 50 mph. She had some glass from the drivers window scratch her up, but walked away.

Both doors and the rocker panel are toast. Motorcylist did not survive.

Ok so the frame of the smart stood up in the crash test but what about the drivers floor compartment? That looked pretty bad but they really didn't give it a good look. Kinda reminds me of the days before crumple zones where the engine ends up in your lap....granted there isn't much of an engine but I don't think having another vehicle on your lap sound like fun either. The first test they showed is exactly what would happen. I want to see that first crash with both going 70mph. That's the real test, you get the g-force of both vehicles. Those 35mph crash tests they do with another car or higher speed test with a solid piece of concrete is really not a good definition of how the vehicle will perform on the road.

In a 70mph head on with in a smart car is going to kill you. Odds are not good in anything you drive really but I don't think having another car drive into & over me is my idea of a fun way to go.You have to take into effect the speed of both vehicles. The pressure on the smart will be much greater than if hitting a solid wall because the other vehicle is actually pushing back rather than just sitting there.

A t-bone in a smart is probably not going to do so as well either. For me, i would much rather be in my behemoth of a truck where about the only thing going to reach me is a bigger truck or a semi. Rather than smacking my head against someone's bumper or hood when they hit me.

Just my $.02.
