6637 conversion on excursion with picts and question
I did the conversion a few weeks ago, here are some picts of the stock air box and then of the 6637.
stock assembled air box
here is it is with the top off
here is the filter out of it
here is the 6637 in it, pretty easy had some left over 4" pipe, cut a section and clamped it in. Just left the temp sensor next to it.
My question is I don't really hear much air sucking but when you let off at say 2000 rpm or higher it make a sound like when air brakes blow off, chhhhhh, sound. I have this same mod on my 96 7.3 but I don't here that when I let off. Is that normal on the sd powerstrokes or something else happening?
I believe it is a severe duty one installed by the dealer, at I think that is what I was told or what the guy I know at the parts store thought it was.

It is the Ford severe duty AIS setup. You can probably sell it for a pretty penny in the classifieds. Here's a link:
Yep, it's an AIS. I wouldn't get rid of it.....I think it's the best at filtering dirt there is for our trucks; and with the fender sleeve, plenty of air.
You guys say it's good for filtering, but how about allowing more air in then the stock normal intake? Mose people to the 6637 for better filter, but the additional large gain in the air intake amount, correct? How does AIS compare to the 6637 mod?
I would be putting that AIS right back in there... It flows enough air for 500hp... No need to ever remove one of those.
A big +1, you kind of took a step backwards ditching that AIS for the 6637. If for whatever reason you think you need more air, there is a fender sleeve you can add to the AIS that pulls more air from the inner fender. And those filter elements last a long time.
