Is there a gauge to monitor turbo temp (not EGT's) but the actual turbo housing temp. I have seen turbo timers, but was wondering if anyone monitors there turbo temp? running temp vs a good temp to shut down at?
Just wait for the EGTs to drop into the 300F range and you should be good. Don't know of any other way to watch the temps. By the time I idle the few hundred feet up the alley to my driveway, my temps are in the 300s. The only thing you really need to worry about IMHO is pulling heavy at high boost for long stretches, then shutting it down too soon. You'd have a hard time coking one empty.
There are some that are out there. Question is whether or not it's worth it to you.
Diesels run at much lower EGT's than gas engines, hence our turbo temps are also cooler. The reason for monitoring turbo temps at shutdown is to prevent oil coking. With today's oil, and the EGT range that these engines normally operate at, oil coking is pretty rare. It's more common on gassers, where you'll also find more turbo timers and turbo temp gauges.
It's not a bad thing to have one. It's just for most people, they'll never really benefit much from it in terms of engine/turbo longevity.
Thanks guy so a couple O' minutes and she'd a gooder, if honkin' or towin'......................I can see why you guys have so many rep's and hears some more.....................
