How in the world did my timing change without the distributer moving. Had the truck timed just right and driving it around for a while. Everything was good till I stopped at a friends house and when I left and started the truck up it I noticed something wasn't right. I had timing issues before and found out to be the balancer slippped. Replaced it and it was good to go. When it started acting up again I took it back home and checked the timing and it was 10 ATC and when i set it after the new balancer it was 10 BTDC. The distributer didn't move either, i thought maybe it moved on me, but the hold down was tight. Timing chain is new. After I set the timing back I feel like it's back to where i was having timing issues again. Now when going down the road, the truck has a bad miss between 1500 and 2000 RPM's. After I get it past 2000 it runs without the miss. Only does it in 3rd and 4th gear. I can baby it between 1500 and 2000 and not miss. Till like to know how my timing jumped like that.
You do know that base time, to be checked or adjusted, the SPOUT plug has to be removed first? Then replaced afterwards to allow ECU to add it's timing advance. After the SPOUT plug is replaced, you are no longer looking at your base time. You will be seeing computer advanced timing. Don't know what yr. or engine you have, but 8 cylinders have a problem w/ #7 & #8, also #3 & #4 wires cross firing.

yeah i know how to check for base timing. i have read up on that 7 and 8 cross fire, checked it out in the dark and i don't see spark jumping, i also tried routing them apart from each other. plus i still need to get new wires too, just have to make them. all the ones i get from advance or autozone there are 2 wires that are to short, i can make one work but it's really tight and the other short one i can't get even close to working anywhere.
With the spout connected your timing should be around 30 degrees, if you unplug it should go back to where you set it
yup that's where it's at. when i checked it after it started acting stupid i pulled the spout out and i was reading 10 atc. so i bumped it back to 10 btdc.
