I just bought a 79 f 150 4x4 and on the way home (98 miles) I had to pull over several times because what I think is the transfer case quits putting power to the rear wheels, seems like it keeps slipping into neutral or something. While pulled over I can put the t-case into any gear and nothing, the auto tranny is full and seems to be doing great. As soon as I turn it off and wait a few minutes, I can then shift back into drive and go awhile longer and it will happen again. The t-case makes all sorts of rattling noises as soon as you get up to ten mph, and you can move the stick and feel the rattling.
Any ideas on what it might be?
Are there any other signs of the transfer case going bad? cause my truck has been doing the same things and i took it to a tranny shop and they said the tranny needs rebuilt. Im wondering if it could just be the tranny or both the tranny and t-case?
I think that my tranny is still ok because it doesnt slip at all. The t-case makes some awful rattling noises. (not grinding, just rattling). If, at a complete stop I put the t-case in neutral the rattling starts as well. Im at a loss here. Like the one post said though, a c6 either works or it doesnt.....
