When I am going 45 MPH or more and need to coast and then apply normal braking to stop for a light I hear a spinning/whirling type noise that gets louder as I slow down (30 to 15 mph). Just before I come to a stop there is a clunk that is felt through the brake pedal and the floor and the noise goes away.
This does not happen when I need to stop quickly, just when I slow down easily. A short stop from 50 MPH does not produce the condition, only when I slow down very smoothly.
I tried to get my dealer service dept. to check my tranny out last week, they say it checks out which probably means no codes and clean fluid. It has been getting sloppy with the way it shifts though and I told them so.
Any ideas? I have never had transmission issues before so I am new to this.
It's an automatic. Tow/Haul mode does not change the condition. Happens in both modes with or without a trailer.
No, I just drove all day listening to it. Thanks for the questions, leads me to point out this: The sloppy shifts feel like play in the driveline which could be a few things. Thanks for the input. The whirl/spinning sound followed by the clunk is pretty loud which makes me visualize gear synchro's. But I don't really know if that is correct, just my imagination.....
The first time I ever drove an automatic trans. was in 2004 so my instincts are based on a '43 Dodge, '53 Chevy 3100, a couple VW's, and a BMW with a Getrag 5 speed. I used to do a lot of shifting without the clutch just for the fun of it.
