1990 2.9, 5 speed manual. 150,000 miles. Fluid recently changed in tranny.
No noise when accelerating or slowing down. A rumble when I let off on the gas but before I slow down, almost like a universal joint noise but they checked out ok.
As I come to a slow stop I have a little mechanical noise, not engine or brake related, until I stop.
Front wheel bearings checked and lubed. Rear wheel bearing condition unknown. Tires wear alright, just balanced.
Has new clutch, new throwout bearing, brakes removed and checked out ok.
Tranny shifts ok but I seem to remember people talking about input bearing problems with these.... I have not checked that.....
Did the noise per chance start with the fluid change? Do you know which transmission you have? The Mitsubishi transmissions (FM145, FM146) take regular 80/90 gear lube, and they do have input bearing issues. The Mazda trans (M5OD) takes ATF. You probably have an FM 146, but I also believe there are exceptions to that, especially around the 1990 year, when the Mitsubishi transmissions were being dropped from the lineup. I'm just wondering if you got the wrong lube in the trans.
Do you still have the Rezeppa CV style rear driveshaft, or do you have a "normal" driveshaft?
Have you checked the fluid level/condition in the rear axle? transfer case (if 4wd)? When I bought my BII, someone had put gear lube in the t-case. should be ATF.
The fluid was changed when I put in the new clutch I bought it 2 years ago with the clutch out of it so I don't know if the noise was there then or not.
I don't know what fluid came out of it, it was drained and then sat 2 years.
I put ATF in but I was unable to identify which tranny it was. Called the Ford dealer with # off it and they didn't know either, they just said it was most likley the Mazda.
How can I tell which it is?
Wrong fluid is a good guess, that would make sense.....
All fuid levels were checked and it does have that wierd rear driveshaft.
therangerstation.com has a decent transmission identification page. Mine had a sticker on the side which I found within 30 s of climbing under it that said FM146, so I didn't bother learning all of the other identifying characteristics. Try their info.
