I am getting some cash when I sell my car soon and was wondering what it takes and how much it costs to convert my 3 on the tree to an automatic?
I know I have to buy the tranny and the mounts for it,and a new steering column.
What else is there to buy?
Is this a PITA to do or is it just a 2 day project?
* Buy and install a C6 & TC. Also get the block plate, dipstick/tube, tranny lines and crossmember, AND Slip yoke. Replace the mount, front and rear seals while you have it out. 'Bout $250
* Buy and install a B&M Transpak, 'Bout $50
* Buy and install a B&M Megashifter (light truck style), 'Bout $175
* Buy and install a B&M tranny cooler, 'Bout $50
* Shorten your driveline and replace your U-joints, 'Bout $125
By installing the Megashifter, you will forego having to install a different steering column and upgrade your shifting performance.
Also, while you have it all apart, CHANGE THE REAR SEAL on the engine. I failed to do this on my engine (which only has 2000 miles on it) and guess what, I now have an oil leak out of the rear seal. Nice!
Don't be cheap, just do it right the first time.
Sometimes when you break that transmission to engine joint you will get grit down in around the rear seal which can cause a leak by wearing the seal or surface.
Ok, I am planing on buying a Lokar Performance floor shifter for the automatic. Would I still have to get a new steering colom if I do that? Also lokar sells the throtle linkage kickdowns that are very nice. I guess all I really need to know is how much time and effort this is going to cost me and also how much money? And I want to do it right the first time. I just cant stand the 3 on the tree anymore. I am driveing my moms old 74 with about 1/4" of clutch left... and she wont replace it untill it goes out, I just hope its not when I am diveing it.!
