My 1979 F-250 4x4 slides all over the place (Unless there is a load on it) when the road is snow covered. Would it solve the problem to install limited-slip and how much would it cost? I have a pair of Dana 60's. Is it easy to do?
first you must make sure your front hubs are engaging. (see if they spin in the snow) even though the transfer case might be engaging the hubs may not be, leaving you in 2 wd. if they are engaging, i dont think limited slip helps in the snow. all it does is make you "fishtail" more. with both rear wheels spinng it makes the *** end of the truck more unstable. I think though that your front hubs are not locking. when i put my 79 250 in 4x4 it takes off great in the snow. almost no spinning(unless you are flooring it) but in 2wd with no weight in the back and my limited slip rear i have to be very careful not to give it any gas around a turn or i will do a 180. my advice is check those hubs to make sure they are locking. they may need to be cleaned. try unlocking-locking them about 10 times each and then take it for a ride.
yeah sounds like your not even in 4wd when your driveing, it shouldnt slip at all if you are in 4wd, check the hubs and if thats not it, and your front tires are ingaged then sand bags will do the trick. If you want to get free ones go find a construction site that has some and ask them if they can spare any, they usaly use them to hold up cones and flagger signs. If they say no come back when they are all gone (sunday) and grab them all , just dont get caught they are 20$ a piece if you do , same as hiting a road cone.
