To me, the lighter weight of a gas engine is a good aspect of a V10 you can't have with a diesel. By adding extra weight to make up for the difference you are handicapping the V10.
By the same token, why not add a turbocharger to the V10? I mean, fair's fair.
In a nutshell, I don't know how much difference that extra weight made, but the appearance is that the guys who set it up were biased from the start and "weighted" the test against the V10.
Otherwise, it proves what we already know: Shelling out an extra $5 grand gets you an engine that tows a little faster and gets a bit better mileage. If it didn't, why would anyone buy it?
Actually I wanted the extra weight. It was more to make up the difference that everyone else had a CC/LB or CC/SB and I had a SC/SB. I had the 800lbs of pellets, 125lb bed box and a full tank of fuel vs the other guys had to travel at least 80 miles since I live in the area we did all the testing in.
So all-in-all I more then made up the difference in configuration weight and even cut into the V10 vs PSD weight. I did this mainly to make sure no one could complain that my truck had a weight advantage. I still nearly tied the 7.3 up the first 15% grade and beat it once the RPM were able to come up as the hill flatten out.
The main thing that killed my starting speed was the TC locking up at 3,000RPM. Mike at 5 Star already explained why this happened. He gave me a few test tunes to try. Unfortunately the trailer we were using was Tom's and not mine so this weekend I'll have happen to have a dump trailer to test with but it will probably only be 6K (3K trailer plus 3K of mulch) instead of the 11K we drug around. I still make a few runs up Buffalo Hill and see what the new tunes can do.
Thanks! I was actually happy the way my 10 year truck, that is nearly stock, performed. I do wish I had 4.30 or even 4.56 since I'm running 285/75 16 (33") tires. I think I could have done way better.
