PSD vs V10

LAST EDITED ON 18-Jul-01 AT 10:06 PM (EST)[p]Not to rehash an old subject, but I have read all the posts on this subject and am still wondering! I want to buy an Excursion and lean towards the Diesel because I know the Diesel will run forever, and the gas mileage is better. I dont think the Expedition is big enough and I wont buy anything other than a Ford. The Excursion will be used by my wife during the weekdays for transporting the kids, shopping...etc, and when we take long trips. We no longer have a boat to tow but will in the future. I am going to test drive a 2WD PSD tomorrow. Looking for some advice. Thx

PSD vs V10

All new engines should last a long time. I suspect that the reputation of long diesel life has been extrapolated from over-the-road truckers, who really roll up the miles on long trips. Wives tend to make short trips...thats especially tough on diesels. Wives also tend not to want to drive vehicles with 350,000 miles. (Your wife may vary..ggg) I still think that the diesel is right >only< if you need the largest of the 3 available engines. The money saving angle is a tough sell in my book.

PSD vs V10

A few reasons that I decided on a V10 over a Diesel.

1) Noise and smell, could not convince my wife that it was worth the extra money.

2) Oil Changes ... It takes 15 QT per oil changea and it is recommended that you change it every 3000 miles.

I am getting 9-13 MPG with the v10, only have 10K miles, hoping for 15 on the Highway, and from what I hear it is possible.

my $.02

FWIW, I get around 15.5 mpg on the highway with the V10. That's with my family, gear and A/C going at 65mph. I'm not a speed demon.

I have 21k mi. on a 2000. Around town I get 12mpg.

PSD vs V10

I have a 2000 excursion w/ v-10 and a 99 f-350 etended cab w/ pwerstroke . Even w/ 1200 lbs. utility bed (not counting tools) my powerstroke will smoke my v-10 and get better fuel mileage. if power means anything to you get the powerstroke. I regret not getting it. In fact the only reasn I got the gas burner is because I got a real good deal (about 10grand cheaper). In my opinion the mighty v-10 is a big disappointment. I previously owned a 88 f-350 w/ a 460 now that is a motor!!!

With the 10 grand you save on the V-10 put a supercharger on it and I bet you won't think your power stroke is so hot and you will still have over 6 K for gas!!!

PSD vs V10

Okay Okay!

PSD with a $350 chip will put out both more hp and more torque than nearly any conceivable hp concoction with a V10. At the same time NO PARASITIC LOSSES (ie Supercharger!) and Will out tow the heck out of the V10. At the same time the applied chip:

Bullydog
TTS
Diablo
PPIII
Western Diesel

etc...

will kep gas mileage at a level BETTER than stock...a calculated 16 mpg around town and 19 mpg on the road towing a 25' boat on pretty level ground (72-4 mph)

There is no comparison! 16 quarts of oil or tuneups?
On the road diesel is almost always cheaper than unleaded...and if you put in a supercharger to try and compete...you'll be runnin' premium fuel!

PEACE!
