I purchased a set of head gaskets. they have metal on one side of them. the other is just the head gasket material. it is not marked on the gasket weither it goes up or down. but the are made the same so one of them would have to be metal up the other would have to be metal down. or if i put them both up or both down one of the ports is blocked off
up or down does not matter, what does matter is FRONT
i hope you're not going to try to use MLS gaskets without first having the surfaces cut to the spec required for MLS gaskets to seal? MLS gaskets on heads and block that have the stock or standard RA finish for composition gaskets WILL LEAK!
MLS Multi Layered Steel is the new latest/greatest fad to come out in head gaskets. they might be the new OEM stuff or whatever, IDK, but they require a specific finish on the deck surfaces in order to work/seal. the old standard surface finish(RA) and MLS gaskets is a guaranteed fail. they probably don't allow as much variation as regular composition gasket either.
FelPro 8347PT-1 is an excellent all-around gasket. i've used them in an 11+:1 build that saw severe detonation and they held up as long as i could stand it.
