360 manifold replacement

I've tried to do my research and have read some very good tips on how to do the manifold replacement job. I was able to get the passenger side off last night in about an hour with no broken bolts. I was told by my uncle who is a mechanic to slap the new manifold on with a little rtv and no gasket. The autoparts store sold me on gaskets and a heat shield the gasket that came with the manifold has a metallic side and a gasket side. I think I am going to try using gaskets first and if that doesn't work, go with no gasket. I have a new manifold for one side due to a broken mounting ear and plan to get the other side planed. What is the best way to the gaskets on so this is a one time jobs? Metallic side of the gasket towards the manifold or head? Cooper rtv on both sides? Do I use the heat shield? Anything else?

I also plan on letting the rtv dry, get the manifolds up to temp, let them cool, then re torque. What should the bolts be torqued in at?

I've never used the gaskets but have had to have some heads surfaced that the PO had used the gaskets and looked like it had attracted moisture and the rusted. AFAIK Ford didn't use gaskets unless it was just the steel shim heat shields on some years and I think that was for the spark plug boots but not sure. I just put them on like Ford did if the surface is flat and smooth, If not have them machined. PITA on the heads but I try to build if I was going to keep it. Most people get lucky but I tend to find snowballs.

IIRC, manifolds bolts are around 25 to 30 ft.lbs. Snug, not gorilla-tight. I use a light application of high-temp RTV to take up surface imperfections before mating the parts. Yes, allow the RTV to cure thoroughly.

BTW, generously apply anti-seize to all the hardware...... A few years from now you'll thank yourself or the next guy will really appreciate the attention to detail.

Thanks guys. I just can't imagine not using gaskets. There were gaskets on there previously and the manifold comes with one so its hard for me not to think I should use one. Maybe that's why I am doing them again as I assume the PO already did. Anti seize is a must for the bolts but thanks for the reminder.

FE exhausts are designed to be used without gaskets , but over the years, things change. If you haven't had your heads and manifolds milled there's no telling if they'll mate up properly or not.
