03 F250 SD 4x4 with 7.3 and 4R100 automatic SOF with 114,000 mile
Felt like transmission was slipping some yesterday in 2nd pulling into driveway. Pulled it into low and it felt OK. Have appt at dealer on
Thursday but seek education on this before filling out mortgage papers
for a rebuilt 4R100.
It seems to work OK when cold. Today, I narrowed it down to it does not always shift down and tries to start off in 2nd or 3rd and this feels like slipping. If I shift it down into low then back up to drive it does OK. Is this solenoid, stuck valve or something other than a fried tranny? It was
dealer serviced at 30, 60 and 90K.
Any help with figuring this out much appreciated. Thanks.
Mortgage papers were completed at the local dealer today. Transmission fried. $3700 for a rebuilt from FoMoCo with 3 year/100K warranty. Checked with a coupple of locals including AAMCO and some offered rebuild at $2K and up with the caveat of " not sure what we will find when we open her up" so I did not deal with them.
Hope the Allison that replaced this model is a better rig.
Not sure where you live but John Wood Automotive in CA, close to the Mexican border, has an ad that says this about their "base" trans:
"This transmission will run up to 375 HP, it has all new Ford parts and custom machined parts by John Wood. This will include a billet converter. This transmission is aimed for the stock to slightly modified truck and heavy towing. A "towmaster" transmission will cost $3600.00 plus shipping and handling."
Considering a stock PSD only produces about 250 hp, it would seem this could be the way to go. He seems to have a really good reputation with the guys here at the forum. He also has a one-day watch rebuild and install program. I don't know what the total cost is, but if you are anywhere near there, it might be worth the call.
114K on the engine if reasonably taken care of isn't much, but the tranny seems to be a weak link with the PSD.
I agree if you are on the west coast John Wood tranny is a good way to go. If you are on the East side of the country BTS is another one that builds these transmissions to stand up to anything you can throw at them. You can't go wrong with either one.

before you shell out over 3grand on a stock ford trans, I'd call up a few of the awesome transmission guys available here. The great thing about jw, bts, and the few others on this board, is hat they will stand behind their trans even after power I
provements and harsh towing. I doubt ford will.
Thanks to all that replied. Being in MD and needing the truck repaired ASAP puts BTS or John Wood's out of reach for me.
I do plan on putting a larger cooler on it. Again thanks to all.
Bought me a BTS last month..... $4,300. Beefed up to last andcomes with a heavy duty torque convertor. Brian will adjust to 'your' spects for two years and after that the transmission is guaranteed FOR LIFE.....
He shipped it to me in one day. my 4R100 shelled at 107,000 miles..... I have 3,000 on my new BTS and I believe that it will pay for itself as I have more power and smoother shifts and my MPG have increased by 1.5, with or without my trailer.
I checked with the Ford Dealer and he said the same...3,700 3year/100,000.....
For the 'life' guarantee and heavy duty, it was easy to kick in the extra 500...
PS: After he shipped the new one to me, I found out that he was only 350 miles away from where I lived (Mid MO) I took my shelled one back to him and Brian 'fine tuned' my BTS even better after I visited with him.

my friend, do yourself a favor and get a BTS drop shipped to you. You will thank yourself later down the road. I just installed one in Oct and i couldnt be happier with my transmission. Best thing i could have ever done. And u wont have to worry about ANOTHER Trans EVER!!!!!
If you are going to dump the truck in a couple of months, get Aamco or whomever you can that is cheapest. Few, if any, will pay you more for any built transmissions.
If you are going to sell the truck in a few years, get a Ford reman. Should be cheaper than 3700. Make sure you DON'T mod the truck or you risk warranty work for any problems.
If you are going to keep the truck, get a BTS. That will ensure that your next breaking of the trans will cost you only the freight. He fixed a trans after 8 years or yearly for a racing truck.
