Ok this is my first post on 48-60 thread. I've always been in 80+. Love my ford trucks. I've always wanted to restore one of the 50th anniversary body styles(53-56) and recently found a decent 56 I'm thinking about buying. I thought I was pretty educated on these trucks but here is my question. This truck is titled as a 56 but does not have the wrap around front windshield nor the sun visor above the windshield! But the guy promises it's a true 56 It really dont matter as I like all 4 years of the truck and the truck seems fairly solid and a good start I was just curious about learning a bit more from the pros here, lol. I've only seen pics so far and no pics of the dash(that would be another give away right?), it really looks a 54 to me, I'm just curious.
Sorry, I’m no help to you, my truck is the one with the beautiful buck teeth (not for long), but I think all 1956 had the warp around windshields, I don’t think it is a ’56, but the real experts will be along shortly. Tell him he is blowing smoke and lower the price, (misrepresentation) is it registered and what year does that say?

Reason: whoops again: This truck is titled as a 56
post your vin # and someone can dechiper it for you.
also the 56 door was different from the 53-55 doors. the 53-55 doors went basically straight down from the front vent window while the 56 door went forward then down from the vent window. take a look at pics of the different years to see what i am talking about.
someone might of switched vin tags to make it seem like a more desireable 56. there should be a vin # stamped on the frame rail between the cab and rad support, not sure if it is on the driver or passanger side. see if the two vin# are the same or not.
Also, here are pictures of 53-56 trucks. On the 53-55 the onlye cternal difference was the grille and trim (internal were the Deluxe and Custom Cab options and drive train differences. 53 had a straight grille very similar tot he 56 but without indented headlights; 54 has the "Sharks tooth" grille; 55 has a V inthe center of th etop bar of the grille and 56 is straight again with indented headlights. 56 had the modified cab with the rectangular wings (as opposed to triangular) to fit the wrap around windshield.
If you post a picture of your truck and the VIN we can sort it out for you.
This just confirms what I thought I knew! I didn't think I've ever seen a 56 with out the wrap around windshield. Like I said it really dont matter to me because I'm willing to restore any of the 4! But I found out a few years that ford made an extended cab version of this truck also. It was considered a millitary version but I saw one at a truck show(I live about an hour away from Pigeon Forge,TN where the f100 show used to be). I was just curious if ford offered any wierdos like that. My guess is someone at one time did some swap-aroo but thanks.
Yep the twin cabs were military and alot went to the Forestry Service.
There's lots of variations - milk trucks, flatbeads, Coke trucks, Telephone Co., etc. Ford sold the older trucks with a frame and cab only variation. So if you had a specific need, you could buy those and slap you own back "thing" on it.
Here is a drawing of the 51 F-series cab only models - I don't have one for "Effies"
One thing I would suggest is that when you get this truck, you find the frame stamped Serial Number, and have the title corrected. The glove box tags were EASILY changed out as were the glove box doors (with the tags). When we find out hwat year it REALLY is, we can tell you where to find that.
sssshhhh ... my 53 is sporting a vin plate and title to a 54 , and the state messed up a number on the new title making it a 55 .... ya ever heard the johnny cash song one piece at a time .... it kinda fits these old girls ...................
You think you got one peice at a time i got a 59 body sittin on a 61 frame with 63 axles, gunna get a 96 dodge tranny and a fuel injected turboed 292. Wonder if i can get me one of those adapter kits he mentions in the song. Now back to the origanal subject my guess is sometime along the line the vins got messed up. Maybe the 56 body got wrecked so they put a 53-55 body on the 56 frame and just kept the 56 title or who knows lots of stuff could have happened in 50+ years. i would say definatly call the guy out on it though as i beleive 56s are more desirable therefore worth more so if you call the bluff and let him know you know its not a 56 and you might get a better deal. You might also mention how much of a hassle it will be to get the title corrected and get a little more knocked off.
I would suggest you run as fast as you can in the other direction from this truck. Sometimes it is almost impossible to get the corrrect title for a vehicle that has had the title messed up. If the frame and glove box are 56 your truck will never be right with a earlier cab. Some knowledgeable law enforcement officer might just take your truck until you can prove it's yours and you will not be able to prove the cab is yours. If the glove box number doesn't match the frame that's a entire different problem.
If the glove box and frame number are actual 55 numbers and in some past transaction the year was mistaken put as 56, I think that wold be fairly easy to fix with your dept. of trans.
Good luck what ever you decide but be well informed before spending any money on a questionable truck.
larry the other thing you gotta think about here is this . it's easy enough to find another truck that's a turd with the appropriate vin and title and correct this issue . i got 2 legal documents myself from turds that got parted . maybe it's not ok , but this happened all the time back in the day , thats why mine is what it is . the no's on the cabs and frames are dain near impossible at times to find so who's gonna know ?????? besides if the truck is a real solid one and is a titling nightmare it would be a good donor for another if the price is right . always another way to look at things . not saying do something illegal but hades man if we all ran the other way and didn't think in a broader spectrum there would be a lot of old cars and trucks not on the road !!!
oh 59 let me know when ya find that adaptor kit huh ???? might need one myself with all the parts i keep gathering .... need to find another truck one of these days so i can let the nut case in me loose again ................ too many things now to do though with bessie the 53 , the recently acquired 52 customline and my "wanna go fast " project / beater the 95 bird ..................
in mines case bill , right from the p.o's family : good truck no title { lost , was his dads i'm told and he passed away no one knew where it was } pos truck going to boneyard anyway { a long time ago they geuss mid 60's } has a good title and the vin and title were transffered / used for the good truck . around these corn fields that was a pretty common practice . now in a megaplex or pain in the **** like l.a / california , yeah i can see where it might become an issue . there's a lot to be said good and bad of old practices . it's up to the owner to decide on which way to go . i know of a cab sitting and i have a spare frame , and if it was to work out i got a title and vin to a pos 55 that literally fell apart in the black hole so .....................
In California, if the truck hasn't been registered in 5 years, there are no records of it at the DMV. I didn't register my boat trailer for that period of time and we had to start all over with it -new title, new registration, new plates, new hull number, etc. What a pain.
