engine dies

hey guys... i'm just wondering if anyone can help me out.. tonight my bronco died on me goin down the road and wouldn't restart.. well after investigating i couldn't figure out what was wrong so i decided to pull the fuel line off at the filter to see if there was any gas and there was so i put the line back on and decided to try to start it again.. well it started right up.. i had the same problem two more times goin home and both times pulling the fuel line and putting it back on fixed it for the time being..

i'm just a little baffled and would appreciate any help..

Hmmm... doesn't sound like the inertia switch is doing anything wrong. The line going crazy... well, maybe the pigtail connector over the tank (don't know if yours have one like mine)? it caused me issues some time ago. I would also check the rail installed pump. Check the fuel pressure to see if you find out anything...

You say you had fuel at the filter... is the filter in front or behind the high pressure pump on the frame rail on your truck?

My thought is if the filter is in front of the high-pressure pump like it is on newer models, disconnecting the fuel line under pressure would do more than just reveal that you had fuel in the line... 35-40 psi would squirt fuel all over the individual releasing the line unless the pressure was released before disconnecting it. So, it would stand to reason that if this kind of pressure release was not the case, the filter is probably pretty jammed up.

The only hiccup in this theory is the location of the filter. If it is behind the high pressure pump (tank side) no such indication would necessarily take place. (And I can't remember right now where it falls in the line so I'm asking before I make a call).

the filter is on the engine side of the pump

i did consider it losing fire but the only thing is that when it dies its like its running out of gas and not losing fire

With the filter on the engine side of the pump, if you removed the fuel lines to it, it should release somewhere in the neighborhood of 35-40 psi. Basically would have been a dangerous mess. If that didn't happen, you have either have a clogged filter or a bad high pressure pump. Since you say you can open the line and go a little further, it stands to reason that when you do, you are letting the crud clogging the filter float back from it and fuel will flow well enough for a while... the crud in the filter is acting like a check valve. I'd be looking at the filter or the HP fuel pump.
