Positive battery cables

Hey guys,

I'm in a mess. Long story short, I am all confused about starter battery cables. I messed with them over the coarse of the last year and need to start from scratch and wire them properly.

I'm using marine cable and can't make sense of the wiring diagrams.

So we have the starter, the starter solenoid, and alternator in the mix here.

Alternator positive lead goes to the fender solenoid on the big post with a fuse link. There's another fuse link that attaches to the same terminal and goes to the fuse box.

I know there are two cables that go from the positive battery post out...

-does one go to the starter and the other to the fender starter solenoid?

At the solenoid, there are three terminals. One is the switching leg small 12v from the ign switch. Then there are the two big posts. One takes the above mentioned fuse links. But what else?

-the positive cable from the battery goes on the other solenoid post AFAIK. But which post does the small solenoid lead off the starter itself go to on the fender solenoid?

I need help connecting all these wires properly.

Not an expert but one pos wire from the battery goes direct to the starter. The other goes to one big terminal on the fender mounted relay along with the wire from the alt. and the fuseable links. A wire then goes from the other big terminal on the relay to the starter solenoid.

I think you have a 6 so you will have two fuse links to the starter relay battery side from the alternator.
There should also be two fuse lings going to the battery compartment fuse/relay box.

One goes to the starter Solenoid down on top of the starter and the other goes to the starter relay.
Both red.

Yes but the item on the fender is a relay and the solenoid is down on the starter.

one large post of the relay gets all of the fuse links and a cable going to the batter and the other large post only gets a cable going down to the starter solenoid.

The other large post by itself.

Maybe this will help:

Thanks a lot for the diagram. That is much better than the one in the Haynes manual.

The truck was a V-8...302. My old one was a I-6 but that's been gone for many many years now. I think they're wired the same anyhow...

Thanks again.
