I have a '76 f150 Supercab 2x4 with a 390. 3.00 rear from factory. My dad bought it new and we used to tow with it when we were kids- a 26 foot camper. 7000 pound trailor.
I wouldn't tow the camper with the truck nowadays! That's gotta be overloaded. Whatcha guuya think?
I would think that trailer would be more like 4500#'s rather than 7000. That is a lot! My parent's used to have a 29' Airstream that was about 4200#'s IIRC. Your truck should be able to tow (with the right hitch, and correct tongue weight) 6000#'s easy. Check the numbers on your truck, you should be able to come up with you GVWR and towing capacity pretty easy.
I have a '75 Supercab 2wd with 390 and c6. I believe the rear end in mine is 3.00 also. I had no problem towing a 6000lb+ trailer on packed dirt and pavement, but started the transmission slipping (it was already in need of seals) when I bogged it down in mud. After a trans rebuild I had no problem towing the largest U-haul trailer available, fully loaded, from Florida to Arizona.
My door tag says it's rated to pull 6050lb.
I wouldn't hesitate to pull a 7000lb trailer if I needed to, but I would be concerned about getting ticketed for being over the rated weight if I got pulled over or if something happened.
Also remember.... just because you can doesn't mean you should. I towed a 12,500 fifthwheel with a 74F350 SC, 390, RV cam and 4:10 rear. Poor old truck HATED it, but it did it. I was too young and stupid to know I shouldn't have been doing that, but the trailer salesman....., well, you know. Whatever you do, remember.. BRAKES< !!!!! Good trailer brakes!! I don't believe your truck was/is rated to tow that much in the first place either, but I don't know for sure. 7,000lbs PLUS the stuff in the truck, including the people is a lot for a 1/2 ton.
