Great board everyone, thanks in advance. I have a question, Recently purchased used 98 Expy, 5.4 4x4, 3.73 LS. For my wife. Previous vehicle was 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
I am wondering about the "feel" of the 4x4 auto function. On the Jeep with "Selectrac" it engaged and disengaged silently and smoothly. On the Ex, it works fine, but engages/disengages with some vibration and noise. I can only equate the feeling with that of how anti-lock brakes feel in snow. The mileage is 25K, and I don't know how much the previous owner may have used 4wd ( I live in upstate NY and use frequently). Could this be a lubrication issue? or are my expectations unreasonable? Thanks.....
A '98 with only 25k? That's a great find! My '97 with 82k does the same thing. The A4WD features works flawlessly, but does make some noise when kicking in and out. As for the vibration, I haven't really noticed any.
My '98 definitely makes some clunks shifting - just enough for me to know something has engaged or let go. I kinda like the re assurance. Kinda like 'hearing' the silence on a quiet phone call, you know it's doing something.
My 99 with the A4WD works EXACTLY as you describe - kind of sounds like ABS engaging.... I have felt no vibrations tho. It could be the front wheels gripping in the slick and shaking the steering a bit.
A4WD is a feature I greatly enjoy.
When you switch into 4 low should you hear a loud bang as it engages and how long should it take to engage? When I put in 4 low and the switch to Drive and move forward it doesn't engage for at least 100ft. Getting it out of 4x4 low is just as bad. Is this Normal.
