4x4 disengages automatically

Hello all, What would cause this? About once a every two or three weeks I will engage my 4x4 Hi only to keep the system lubed. When I engage I feel the slight clunk and if turning, I can feel the binding. I use the same location/road always when doing this. In this case, further down the road the light stays on but 4x4 is no longer engage (no binding of feel felt). I dont feel it disengage either. Any hints?

Its worked no problems in the past.

I engage at about 15MPH and cruise for about .5 miles at 35MPH or so before slowing to disengage at 15MPH. I typically reverse into every spot I go into too.

AC blows fine. Especially in the cold.

Thanks.

First, if you're doing this on dry pavement, DO NOT DO THAT

It sounds as if one of your front hubs are not staying locked.

I had this happen with my 2001, which is a different setup, but the hubs work basically the same.

The hub has to "latch" into it's locked mode. When the vacuum goes away, the hub should stay locked. The initial vacuum pulse is 40 seconds.

So, if after 40 seconds, the hub unlocks, it's not staying latched.

It could just need to be lubed, or the latch is broken.

What you do is, put it in 4x4, in the driveway, make sure it's locked in. Then, jack up both front wheels, and spin each wheel to see which one is unlocking.

Thanks for the response Krewat. It is a gravel road with some slight displacements. I engage prior to getting on it.

Now I know where to start. Thanks again.

Been a bit to post. Just a quick question on this. It looks as if 4x4 will work if I lock it in manually. Why is this possible? Is the latching mechanism only related to ESOF? Sorry for the newbish question?

I intend on jacking the truck of later this weekend to hopefully see which hub is at fault.

Thanks much.
