i have a 2002 f150 5.4 with the 4r70w and i am about to relace the rear main seal and am going to have to pull the tranny. i have a torque converter out of a 4.6 with the 4r70w laying in the shop. i have read they are better than the 5.4 converter. anyone done this or have more info if it would be worth it?
im running a 4.6l torque converter in my 5.4l truck right now. Im actually swapping back as we speak. The 4.6l converter lets it spin up easier and do better burn outs but thats about it.
The 5.4l makes most of its power at a very low RPM and the higher stall speed of the 4.6l converter misses part of the power band that the engine has to offer. Or at least thats how i feel after driving my dads stock 5.4l/4r70w and my 5.4l with higher stall converter.

It isn't necessarily "better"-they're both built the same. It is a higher stall speed than the 5.4L converter-that's really about it.

Was there a year that had a 3 disc lock up vs a 2 disc lockup? Maybe im misremembering, but i thought there was one that was a bit beefer.
The '03 Marauder converters were furnace brazed and had some slightly better internal construction, but were an ever higher stall speed than the 4.6L truck converters. There were NEVER any OEM converters for a 4R70W that had multiple disc clutches.
