just checking - I'm putting the heads back on my 351M
when installing the rocker arms and pushrods
the exhaust valve is the larger valve of the 2 in each cylinder right?

Intake valves are larger than exhaust valves. But the rockers and pushrods are the same for each, so I don't know why the valve size would matter for the purposes of your statement. And if you were to follow the ports to or from each valve, you should be able to tell very easily which is which.

Unless you are just curious, it's doesn't matter. The rockers and push rods are hydraulic and as Wayne mentioned, all the push rods are the same size and length - or at least they should be.

Yo should be able to drop them in, and set the assembled rocker arms on top and bolt them down - evenly, a little on each bolt at a time.

Are you sure? Normally the Exhaust are larger than the intake.

Valves themselves, larger and smaller, yes. Hydraulic pushrods and rockers - don't think so - same size.

He's installing pushrods and rockers.

PS Intake valves are larger on the 351M and all "Modern" Ford Big Block Engines.

When you put a log on a fire which is bigger...the log or the ashes it leaves behind? Same is true with any internal combustion engine...bigger valve is needed to let in gas/air and smaller valve to let out the burnt exhaust.

Sorry - I was having a major senior "DUH" moment. Realized it when I looked at the head and followed the exhaust port back to the valve. I was getting ahead of myself thinking about adjusting the valves . . . snugging down 5 of them, then rotating the crank 180 and doing 4 more, etc. etc.

I think the 351M has non adjustable Hydraulic lifters and rockers, right?

So you inserting the hallow push rods and torquing down the rockers on top, yes/no?

Yes, non adjustable . . . you snug them down a few at a time; in 3 steps, rotatingthe crank 180 then 270 degres. All this because I cant get 3 broken exhaust studs out of the heads. Might as well pull off the heads and take them to a machine shop now before the motor goes in. Man, I haven't pulled off heads in maybe . . . 45 yrears ? Good Golly Molly !!
