silly tire size and axle strength question

Alright i have an 82 f-150 (see sig) and im hoping i can run a 4" lift (suspension) and 34" tires. First off is the dana 44 front and 9" rear strong enough to hold 34s and will they rub whith just a 4" lift.

Max tire size for Dana 44 is 35", Ford 9" is 37".
To see what will fit, Click Here to see the fitment guide from NTW.

Hope this helps.

I dont believe a 1982 had a D44 front, unless you put it there. Or maybe i missed something.

You missed TTB = Twin Traction Beam from '80-96

It's IFS (Inferior Front Suspension), but it's still a D44 in most respects.

Thumbs up silly tire size and axle strength question

I have an '80 with the Dana 44 TTB and the 9" rear with 3.00 gears. Same truck as yours, only 2 yrs older. I put a 6" lift on it with 35" Thornbirds. I have had no problems yet, been through many mud bogs and mild trails. I don't see any problems with what you are proposing.

I may not push 35" tires becouse i still whant to be able to flex well. Unless at full stuff the 35s dont rub, anyone have input on this.

At full stuff with 6" on the '80, my 35's barely fit. I don't know if the 4" lift would work for extreme flex. If you are just doing mild stuff, it may work. The only problem with the big tires is that you cannot make a hard turn. My thornbirds rub on the arms that the axle pivots on. Not too cool, but I don't worry about it. I just avoid turning real sharp. The ***** on the T-birds remind me because they make the truck bounce as they rub the arms. I have a picture with my truck flexing a little in my photo gallery. Go check it out if you want to see what the 35's look like on 6" of lift and some flex.
