I've got a 1988 F-250 4WD with a C-6 transmission (its gone). Would it be better to rebuild this C-6, or swap it with a 1990 E40D out of a F-150 4WD truck?
The E4OD has a lock-up torque convertor and an overdrive, so it'll get you a lot better fuel economy, but the C6's reputation for durability and reliability puts ALL other auto transmissions to shame. It would be my choice for a trannie that sees offroad time, and I'm assuming that's what you want to know.
I personally also would not trust a trannie from a 1/2 ton in a 3/4 ton. Theoretically there shouldn't be any difference, but who knows. If it was an E4OD in the 150 then it was more than likely bolted up to a 351. You F-250 would need to have a 300, 302, or 351 for it to bolt up. The 460 has a completely different bolt pattern.
Additionally, you would need to rig up a computer to run the E4OD as it is controlled by the ECM.
