'96 Ranger Super 3.0L V6 5 speed; odometer broke at 190,486, guessing about 225K miles on chassis - used engine put in at about 150K (engine supposedly had 55K on it)..
Noticed rust in the coolant reservoir (replaced radiator & coolant about 3 years ago), and set about exchanging dirty coolant with distilled water at about 6 quarts at a time (did it once) - capacity is listed at 10.2 quarts. While driving truck to heat to operating temp for second exchange, heard god-awful squealing from engine - figure water pump bearings are shot. No problem, since we've owned the Ranger for almost 10 years, and I don't remember ever replacing it.
Question is: should I go ahead and replace the timing chain (or anything else) while I'm replacing the water pump? My oldest son is still in college, and I promised to provide him transportation until he graduates - could be up to 4 more years.
Second question is should I go with a Motorcraft water pump, or do you recommend another brand? Usually check RockAuto prices with local auto parts stores - any other sources you recommend?
