Is there any way to look at the vin and tell if the truck came original with the big back window? If so, what is the letter or number? I know that you could check the cab to see if it was welded, or a fiberglass kit added. Any help would be great.
Thanx
In 56 all big back windows were steel, fiberglass kits are new (as in the past ten years or so). Not sure on the vin code for a big back window. Is the back of the cab fiberglass or steel?
There is no number in the vin to say it was a b.w..
The b.w. is getting easier to build and I just helped a guy do a cab and it was not hard.
You can also buy a bebops fiberglass cab with the b.w. feature,if you like it.
There is nothing in Vin Code that will tell you if its a original big window. As you stated, you could look for evidence of a window being added. Somebody swapping a original big window cab onto a different chassis and you'd never know.
The information in the vin includes the model year, engine type, assembly plant, and consecutive unit number. Nothing about body options.
That said, there may be a code on data tag stating if it is the deluxe, custom cab model, or a standard cab. While that won't tell you for sure if it's a big window, I believe it would rule out the possibility if it's a standard cab. My understanding is the big window was optional on custom cab models. The 56 experts here may be able to verify that.
You could actually get a big back window in any trim either standard or custom cab.I had an f500 that had standard cab trim but was a big window, which gave stainless trim around all the windows. These days with the steel big window panel available any cab could be converted. Its no harder to weld that in then the lower patch panels for rust repair. If you have a small window and want a big window then just make it but if you do sell it make sure you tell the buyer its a conversion. If it is done correctly it should not be a big deal.I drive my trucks and prefer the small window because the sun doesnt burn my neck so much!
Thanks for all the input. Terry has a big back window but it's a conversion, the cab is a little rusty so if I decide to I will convert mine to a big back window. I really like the idea of a metal one opposed to the fiberglass. He also has the fiberglass complete rear section from the top seam to the bottom of the cab. The metal is less material and work to take out, and a lot of bracing So if I do the metal conversion I will have to go buy a wire feed. ( Good excuse ) That's what I'll tell the old lady. (dog house here I come!!!!)
