I just went out and took a look at my truck. The air cleaner element looks the same as mine. It seals where the cleaner element buts against the but of the housing. I don't see any issue with the gaps showing on the top from this angle, they do not seal anything.
They have since changed the design to still use the stock clamper piece I believe. I bought mine right when I got the truck in 03. It was a bad design though.
There is a big rubber seal on both sides of the air filter. It looks like it isn't sealing, but it is. Changing the air filter is high on my list of things that should be easy, but are not. When I put the new one in my truck, I could barely buckle those clamps. What a PITA.
when changine the air filter you should pull the whole thing out, replace the center section then reinstall it as one part. its less then 10 min to do. if you'r fighting it then your doing it wrong.

Agree 100%. Ten minute job and piece of cake when you have the procedure down.

I acknowledge this, but I removed a K&N intake that came with the truck. Having never seen the OEM filter before, I just made a go at it. I had no idea what I was doing, I just did it and there was no doubt that I was clearly doing it wrong.
