I've been trying for a few weeks now to get the door on my truck aligned up and have had no luck I was wondering if some people can give me procedures or tips I would greatly appericate it.
What's it doing? Is this a replacement door, a damaged/repaired original door, or is it the original door and over time it's gotton harder to close & now lines up like crap & won't close? What year & which side & cab style (standart, ext cab, or crew cab?) Lastly what have you moved, loosened, bent or hammered on?
you have to pull up then ram into it for it to latch,i bought it used from a guy off craigslist i got it from someone that caused a tbone. Its a 1989 ford f150 lariat xlt standard cab.on the door i hammered on nothing the body i didnt either unless the cab is bent nothing has been messed with.
It took me a couple hours alone to get it close when I replaced my hinges. When I do my fenders, I'll take some time to get the door perfect. A jack stand, ratchet strap from the ceiling, and strategic application of bolts helped. If you haven't removed the inner half of the hinges, it'll be easier, since you only have two dimensions of play to deal with adjusting instead of three.
Take the striker pin out of the jamb first and close the door in a normal manner (dont slam or force). If door doesn't want to close the hinges are sprung open. You should replace the hinges. You can bend/pry them back but you will bend the door & ft jamb in the process. If the door closes ok but doesn't line up, first set the upper body line at the fender (unless you replaced the fender too). Then get the door back to cab jamb gap even, may have to shim the door at the hinge. Shim on top hinge bolt moves top of door back/bottom of door forward, shim on bottom hinge bolt moves bottom of door back/top of door forward. Once you these 2 lines you need to set in & out. Only 2 hinge bolts s/b snug, middle 2 s/b loose. Make sure bolts are only tight enough to hold the door in place, you s/b ablr to move door in or out by pushing on it/pulling on it. Push/pull till one end (top or bottom) line up and turn its bolt an extra turn, do other end and door is done. Re-install the striker pin and set snug till the latch hits it dead on don't force or slam as it will jamb. Take off interior panel before you do this incase you didn't listen so you can get the door to open once it's jambed on the pin.
