np435 1st and reverse question

np435 1st and reverse question

hey i got a 79 f150 4x4 with 4speed. i think its np435.. not positive ...anyway my 1st and reverse will pop out of gear. HARD!!! cant hold it in place. it pops under higher rpm but whines o r grinds in 1st and reverse at all speeds.i know that they whine but it never whined this much untill it started SLAMING out of gear. i was told it was the syncronisers...but seeing how these trans dont have syncronisers in 1st and reverse, i dont quite know.. what do they use then?? what causes this SLAMING out of gear, and noise??? could it be just the amount of bind on it?? HELLLLLLLPPPPPPP!!!!! im sure someone knows.. please help and thank you guys

Popping out of gear is worn shafts and/or other internal parts.

ID your trans here:

Domestic Truck Tranny Guide

Do you:

--have enough tools, time and experience to try to rebuild it yourself?

--have a trans shop you've dealt with and trust & the money to pay them $500 for an overhaul?

--a scrap yard nearby, a friend with nothing to do and some tools and good luck at finding usable things amongst the unusable?

Your trans needs a rebuild or replacement.

Yeah when a manual tranny starts popping out of gear like that it's telling you it needs a rebuild.

yea i agree with the rebuild.. im not going to pay a shop to rebuild it..i have never done it but i feell confident. have a few guys i can ask for help and i can get instructions and i enjoy wrenching.. it not a daily driver eather so i can take time to do it.. so that being said, oh and thank you guys for the advice, what are my options when it comes to rebuid kits?? if im going to rebuild it i want to rebuild it THE RITE WAY!!! ive seen rebuid kits on broncograveyard but do they make anysort of "upgrade" kit for the np435?? if i DO have to replace gears should i buy different ratio? do different ratios cost more? what all advice can you guys give me when it come to picking out rebuid kit?? thank you guys

Rebuild kit should be synchros, bearings, gaskets and any shifter bushings that would wear.

If you open it up and find damaged gears, I would just get another trans. You will spend a fortune for new gears, or will have to buy a donor anyway. Ymmv.

thank you good sir...i dought the gears are bad. it still shifts fine. just askin for an oppinion...you think i shoud put a new cluth in it while im at it?? im thinkin a dirt digger..im not having problems with my cluth just askin you guys,,,thanx

Unless the clutch is fairly new, replace it--all components. The labor is the tough part, so you're almost there once the trans is out.

The first thing you need to do is identify it. The T-18 and the NP435 look similar from the outside but my T-18 has a big "Borg Warner" logo cast into the driver's side.

I have a link to a really good T-18 rebuild article. If that ends up being what you have let me know and I'll post it.
