truck has been sitting for 2- 3 weeks. changed the power valve in the holley 750 cvarb sunday. put back on and flooded truck trying to start it. let it sit tried again. batt died. charged batt all day. tried tomight and the truck finally started but wouldnt odle at 200* after warmup. bumped idle up to 2000rpm and let run 1/2 hour. gas seems to be slightly leaking near the throttle linkage and the front bowl near the bolts around the nylon washers, yes they are tight. turned off truck then went to restart and the starter died. now it cranks then spins free, you have to wait till it stops spinning then try again. think its the magneto. called for price on starter and its $87. not too bad. i know the truck has sat for awhile before me then i ran it then i stopped running it for a little, but damn!!!!
You might as well put a kit in the carb. It has set around too long, and the gas they sell now is nasty stuff. It only takes a couple of months to go stale. Make sure it has a good fuel filter on it too. Don't be surprised if you end up getting a new fuel pump too. Anything this old gas touches, it ruins. Hopefully you can get by without pulling the gas tank.
Be sure your electrical connections are all tight and clean - if not, the starter might not be getting all the juice it needs.
Bendix might be bad on the starter. Whatever you buy, get the lifetime warranty version. Quality seems better than the standard rebuilds
Careful with the carb bowl screws - too tight can cause warpage of the body parts and then it'll always leak. When you rebuild it be sure the mating surfaces are all true.
tried today. no dice. the starter will be replaced this weekend the lifetime version for sure. seems like there is no gas getting to carb during cranking. the clear fuel filter seems empty. i pumped the gas but no fuel flowed to the filter. im going to get fuel tommorow and put in the tank. i think as dumb as this sounds is that there isnt enough gas in the tank? maybe it burned it up when it idled for the 1/2 hour. the carb bolts are tight, i hope not too tight. rthe carb was just serviced when i gopt it 5-6months ago, new jets and gaskets and now new power valve.
let you know tommorow if fuel helps.
I can't remember what your truck is, but anytime my clear filter is dry I pull the gas tank and clean it out. I have a new line between the tank and carb. I've had leaves, fluffy chunks of rust, etc. plug the outlet in the tank.
If your filter is dry, either the pump has problems or the gas can't get past a plug in the tank or line. (your tank or cap is vented isn't it?)
pulled the line today. nothing blocked. filled tank up. tried again. truck c ranked right up then burped through the mufflers and dies. steady cranking shows fuel through the filter now but wont start. still need new starter wick is killoing the batt. the truck seems to sound different when cranking though. i cant see why though.
all i did was take the front bowl off the carb, change the power valve then reinstall bowl. now the truck sneezes through the carb once and awhile during extended cranking. almost started tonight before the batt died but, i thinl i floodded it, the carb sneezed, barked through the muffler tjhen blew a fire ball through the carb.
im confused as too why now?n ill change the starter this weekend and try again. im not trying till i get the new starter.
Have you checked the choke? My old carb's choke used to close itself on me and that's what it would do when I would try and start it. One thing that also helped with that carb was to pump the accelerator pedal about three times then hold it to the floor when cranking it. I also had some guy spray some crap down my carb once mumbling something about it, have no clue what he said, but it seemed to make the engine start better (the problem was with the starter and I have no clue where he came from).
Gwilkrrs,
You might want to check the power valve again. Until recently, everytime my engine backfired through my Holley 600, it would blow the power valve. After a few replacements, I bought a "power valve blow-out preventer kit." Basically, it is a hollow screw with a check valve in it that replaces on of the screws in the base of the carb (instructions show exactly where it goes). I haven't had to replace the power valve since. Cost about $10 from Auto Zone, if I remember right.
my friend said the same thing. but thr sneeze happened before i started it. then it started and all seemed well. the starter will be pulled this weekend but might not be reinstalled.
my friend said that he thinks i cranked the lifter dry and maybe a stuck valve, would be why its barking through the muffler. he said get the new starter so i can have a good crank and a strong battery. im praying the new starter will be all it needs to start. once i get it to start and run i will leave it alone till it warms up.
