My F250 slips in 3rd and 4th, and gets up to 190 degrees empty driving around town, but the fluid is still bright red, and no burnt smell.
Its been doing it for months, so i wouldnt judge it by the fluid.
It just may be time for a rebuild and a bigger cooler.
250? not me i said mine got to 210 and was reving very high at 3k rpm before shifting
Ok, I just did over 500 miles today in 81* weather empty in the Ozarks, going to BTS. My trans temp never got over 145* doing 75mph climbing the Mountains. In fact, my trans was cooler in the Mountains going up and down then it was in the flat land. . I will see what the BTS trans does tomorrow going back home.

<---thats the big grin you'll have on the way home Rick.....Im jealous
smell smells a little strange. but not burnt. filter ive never done since ive had the truck almost 1 year. and was planned for next month. i have an appointment with my tranny guy that does all the trucks that are small at the fire co i run with. so hopefully all will work out in the end instead of needing a full rebuild. it is gonna have a filter when it is in there since he has to drop the pan and inspect everyhting. and a trans flush. if all is good it will be getting a external filter put on and a napa larger trans filter. so all i can do is hope. if it needs more it will get the full rebuild with a upgraded torque converter. and all items i mentioned in this post. so thank you all for the help. next i need to look into the rough feeling u get like a gas engine with one spark wire starting to go. WOOOOHOOOO not fun at all
It is a 99. Its time for a trans and when doing so change the bottom of the radiator to let the trans fuild go thur it and put on a 6.0 trans cooler. You will see 135 to 145 around town and maybe 160 towing heavey loads. Thats what I did with a johns wood trans because i'm in california. I've never been happier now. before this I was towing in the sand stoped to help somebody else then went to move and trans fuild came out the front seal. I let it cool down added three quarts and it was okay for the next two years. Also before I put on gauges , you can go 10 mph up hills at 20f outside temp and not know the trans is at 210 degrees and higher.
Right now I have 88k miles on the truck. And it looks like brand new. Its a little hard for me to say its a 99 so I gotta hard time saying I gotta change a bunch of crap

Damn a 99 with 88k....that is new.
My 99 F250 went 234k on the original trans doing alot of towing.
My 99 F350 has 231 on the original trans, and I found a registration for a 32' tt and a boat in the owners manual, so I guess it did its share of light towing.
But on the same note my boss's 01 F350 had a trans rebuild at 103k, my next door neighbor is on his 3rd trans at 100k (99 F250 gasser)
I guess I got two good ones.
Hope your is an easy and inexpensive fix.
i had a tranny put in my 04 f150 at 16k. transmissions are weird...........some LAST...................some DONT!!! if it needs rebuild, do it (or have it done) RIGHT!!
My trans had 144000 when it let loose. I tow ten or twelve times a year and changed trans fuild every 30000 miles. Brother in laws went at 100,000 jis brother in law 3 in 90,000 miles both sd f350's.
well it is certin. the trans had a few burnt clutch's in it so now it getting rebuilt with higher grade torque converter, shift kit, and something with 3 letters, b something. hell im not sure. should have it back mondayish
well id post a few pics of the trans on the bench getting rebuilt but im not sure how to on here. And franko, is your dually lowered?

Glad to hear your getting her fixed. no more worries
It looks lowered in that pic, but it's not. I had a load of firewood in the bed. The guy I bought it from had a lowered dually, and it really looked good. I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I work my truck to much.
ok full rebuild has been done for 2300 bucks, bigger torque converter and he checked to see if the specs were the same as the converters that are sold by a few places on the net and sold for 8-900 dollars. Also put a shift kit in and got rid of the mushy shifting with some valve being pulled out and replaced by a plunger, for longer trans life. It went from a 4-5 clutch in places and a 3-4 clutch in ithers. Also was stated that there was a 2 piece flange pulled and replaced with a one piece for safety. A external trans cooler was also put on but had to be piggybacked onto the stock one. Aparently the stock one has a thermastat inside to tell the trans when it needs new fluid. That was found out after a 2 mile trip down the road and the temp being at 195 deg. But all is good now. Wow is it strange to feel the trans to shift that hard. The trans has even chirped the tires when down shifting from 2nd to 1st
