Should be both already- that is stock. To check it, take the cap off, and try to turn the rotor back and forth. It should turn forward a little, and snap back. If not, just get a rebuilt one.
you can also get a vaccum pump attach it to the centrigal advance pump it up should increase the idle of the truck as it is advanceing the timing when you do that

well i just though about this while i was working on it tonight, i could just plug the vac line put a timing light on it and then rev it. If it moves then theres a mechanical, if not just vac.
I also have an '82 300 engine with a distributor of unknown vintage. It is a points unit and has no provision for mechanical advance! Don't all distributors need to advance timming with rpms?I want to retain the points but surely need to advance timming,especially at W.O.T?
Ok, let me rephrase: if there is no centrifugal advance, then the dizzy is bad. Period. It can be rebuilt, but after spending $40 in parts, and an hour of your time, you just may want to replace it with a $45 rebuilt and tested one. But ALL 300-6's AFAIK have a vacuum advance too. There are specs in the shop manual for what the advance is supposed to be at what rpm. Are there problems with the truck that make you suspect a non-functioning advance?
