Hello, I've got an '04 exp with the differential whine. I have thought about getting a junk yard unit. I know that route would probably be a waste unless I got one from a model made after Ford figured out the problem. Does anyone know when they fixed the problem in production? Thanks.
I think so, It has 3.73 gears and the 2" factory hitch reciever. The dealer told me the complete updated differential assemblies are no longer available from Ford. They offer a kit with bearings and new gears now. Any truth to this?
I got the same info from my dealer in SoCal before I moved here; had the kit that included clutch packs for the LS installed under warranty at 21,000 miles. I'm at 61,498 now and no problems; I do lotsa boat towing so I guess it was a good fix.

If it's just a mild whine it would be a lot less expensive to just turn the stereo volume up a bit and live with it. The fix will likely be well over $1,000.00. If its really loud it has to be fixed and a salvage unit would cost efficient.
I have lived with the issue for awhile now, I am more concerned about what its going to take to get someone to buy this thing after I am done with it. My explorer has been well taken care of and looks like a new one inside and out. Whos going to buy something that sounds like it has a serious differential problem? I know I would pass. Other than this, I have only had minor issues and standard maint. to worry about.
