ok, so the constant knock ( think its a bad piston pin or a bearing ready to grenade ) is starting to drive me nuttier than squirrel poo.... so this weekend im gonna tear down the spare motor ( its a 93 7.3 idi ) and see about bearing sizes and piston bore conditions and such...anyone recomend a good overhaul kit ? looking for fairly complete-- i have new head bolts, but i still need new gaskets, bearings, rings ,timing chain, oil pump,etc...the motor thats in now ( with the knock ) has a banks sidewinder on it, it RIPS but makes all kinds of bad knocking noises. anyone point me in the right direction ? also, my "p.o.s." transmission ( its the e40d, unfortunately...) seems to work 'backwards'-- at light throttle it shifts nice and hard,( in a good way ) but under heavy throttle it shifts too soon and too soft. any ideas here ? thanks again guys !
No timing chain in these motors. Have you checked and made sure it is not an injector knock. If is has been knocking for awhile and has not gotten worse it would be hard for me to belive it is a bearing.
changed all 8 injectors for new ( not rebuilt ) "G" code injectors with no change in the knock. i have no idea what else it could be besides a bad piston pin or a bearing.
I bought my rebuild kit off ebay for $475.00 but that is a re-ring kit. My kit had Clevitt rod and main bearings, Fel-pro gasket set minus intake/valley pan gasket and Hastings piston rings. All name brand stuff so I was pleased. The company was very good to deal with and I would recommend them to anyone looking for parts. They also have kits with cam shaft, timing gears, pistons, oil pump, ranging from my 475 re-ring kit to a 1200 dollar complete kit.
Here is a link to the re-ring kit for the 6.9 and from there you can go to there store and search for other parts.
