Wow, your son must have some pretty impressive talents.

The reality is that in 10 years it doesn't matter which of those two schools he went to. Neither one of them are going to open up any more doors to him than the other will. At that point it will be about his resume and his accomplishments. Both are obviously excellent engineering schools. So I would really factor in other considerations like cost, distance, and weather. I have to agree that the weather at Stanford is FAR more pleasant than anywhere in Massachusetts.

Thats about what we were looking at from what they told our daughter. I would suggest MIT due to the offer but remember its up to them. My daughter chose the one in state over mit but she does have enough scholarships to pay for it. If anyone has younger children get them interested in science fairs. We got our daughter interested in them when she was in the 9th grade. She won most of her schollarships that way. Good luck on the choice. MIT is a good choice from what I have seen. Let us know the direction if its not MIT.

He has been in gifted schools since kindergarten. Cost is cheaper at MIT, ($1,900 VS. $4,700 per year) MIT is closer, weather is not a factor for him, as we live in Chicago. Only thing I don't like about Stanford, is that you can't go anywhere without a car. There are no stores or anything to do near the school. At MIT you can walk to anything you need, and there are 32 other Colleges within walking distance! Stanford is very rural. (and twice the distance from home) In 2 weeks he goes to Stanford for a few days.

I think that after he visits Stanford you'll see that that's not true. It's not rural at all. The campus is walking distance to downtown Palo Alto which is chock full of businesses, restaurants, bars, and stores. There is a CalTrain station right next to campus that will take you anywhere from San Jose to San Francisco.

I used to work in downtown Palo Alto and it's one of the nicest (but most expensive) towns in the bay area. If I was rich I would spend a million dollars on a modest house in Palo Alto.
