'01 Dually Towing Questions. Need some advice/facts.

Hey guys, normally I'm in the 6.0 forum, but I've got a question for you guys.

My dad is going to be purchasing a Keystone Raptor 35' fifthwheel trailer. We would be pulling it with my truck, as well as his truck (2001 f350 PSD DRW). My dad did some research and found that my truck is able to tow more than his. Is this true? I though for sure that that 350 dually even with the 7.3 would be better suited to tow that trailer than my 6.0 250 SRW. The trailer weighs 13200lbs loaded.

Thanks guys!

If the F350 is a 2x4 and it has a 4:10 rear end it should be better than a 4x4. The DWR will help on a windy day better than SWR. What gears are in the F250? I for one would rather have the 7.3 over the 6.0

thanks,

i'm pretty sure the 350 is a 4x4. the 250 has 3:73 gears. So you think our f350 would be better for towing this trailer, even though it's not rated to tow as much weight?

The tow ratings are created by many different variables. Generally the weakest link is the limiting factor. It is generally agreed that the 6.0 transmissions are much tougher than the 7.3 trannys. That may be the reason for the lower rating on your dad's truck. The 7.3 is more than capable of towing the weight you list but the transmission could suffer. Basically, Ford underestimated the power of the 7.3 and did not back it up with the proper transmission. They learned their lesson and made a nice transmission for the 6.0 trucks. I recommend your dad add a tranny cooler to supplement his existing cooler and you should be good to go.

Post back and let us know which truck tows better. You are probably going to really like how the DRW 7.3 tows. Enjoy your RV!

The dually is heavier. They subtract that weight from the towing capacity.

Even 14,000 lbs is a small load for me and my dually. I am not alway legal with my loads, but my truck has no problems pulling on flat ground and the hills in AR and TN. I had a srw before the dually and I can tell you there is a big difference pulling loads between them. You will not have a problem with your truck either.

Okay, but Rick.. is it not true that your truck turned the best times on the track at the last Riffraff..

To the OP Please note, not all trucks are created Equal, created maybe, but modded not....

But your truck should be fine all day, but add that tranny cooler.

Thats only because it was a short track. If it would have been on a 1/4 mile track, I would have been at the bottom of the pole. The going fast is just a by product of my truck being built to pull.

i have a 6 speed trans and my camper is only around 10K so it's not exactly the same. the 6.0 may be able to pull it faster but the 7.3 with DRW's will be much more stable and and a more enjoyable/less stressful pull.

without looking up your camper model....if its not a fifth wheel then get a good WDH with sway control.

Edit: i see it's a fifthwheel now...sorry

The dually is going to be more stable and will be an easier pull. But if he doesn't have a tuner on it to get some more hp and help the transmission out, then it won't be much fun IMO. If that's the case I'd use the 6 leaker.
