I have a 97 Expedition 4WD with 90k. I have had no issues with this vehicle until recently. I have an anoying front end squeak when I turn the wheel. It sounds like a vehicle with poly bushings in it. I have lubed all that can be lubed. It sounds as if it is coming from the steering box. I have heard other Exp. and F150 make the same noise. Does any one know what this is? I love my Exp but this is driving me mad (plus it is very ebarrasing). Thanks, Jim
STOP!! No need to buy a new pitman arm! I had the same problem as with many other people - all you need to do is get a syringe filled with grease and insert it in the boot of the arm - the squeak is gone for good!
Well, I replaced the pitman arm. The syringe is a great Idea as long as the boot is in good condition (mine was not). The cost of the arm was about $30.00 at the Ford dealership. If you have a 2WD this would be a simple task assuming you have the tools to do this. On a 2WD it would take between 10-30 min. On mine it was a few hours. (The syringe and some RTV on the boot would have been much faster!) The job is lengthy and has a much higher degree of dificulty on the 4WD models. End result......The noise is gone!
Thanks for all the help!
This is a great site!

Can you get a syringe filled with grease at parts shops or is it something you have to put together?
I went to the local feed store and purchased a medium sized syringe and a large needle. I then pulled the plunger out of the syringe and filled it up from the grease gun. It can be time consuming pressing all that grease out of the syringe, but it's quite inexpensive. I think 3 syringes and 3 needles ran me about $6.

I gotta do something like that... I got a 22 gauge syringe this wknd and loaded it up. It was very hard to squeeze the grease out and I don't think I got enough in.
Working on getting an 18 gauge now... I'll post back how that goes.
You can buy a hypodermic style grease needle at most auto parts stores. It's basicly a grease zerk on one end and a 2" long needle on the other. They sell for $1.50 to $2.50.
I greased the sqeaking pitman arm on my '97 F150 two years ago and haven't had a sqeak since!
My 1997 XLT 4x4 had the same squeak. My extended warranty covered it.
They couldnt get the pitman arm off, so they took the steering box off also. They still couldnt get it off so they put a new steering box on and a new pitman arm. The only bad thing was the fact that the new pitman arm does not have a grease fitting. When I questioned them on it they told me they had to use OEM Ford parts ---which does not have a fitting. If it ever squeaks again---out comes the syringe.
