You will need ::::
Motor mounts
More than likely a rear sump oil pan. (If your 4x4 is lifted enough you could use the front sump)
accessary brackets. The 2wd stuff is too low and the 400 stuff wont swap over.
A 390 flywheel............
This question comes up daily so you can search the forum to read tons of info.
On the 2 wheel drive trucks the cross member is much lower so all the accessaries sit too low to work with the 4x4 cross member. The 2 wheel drive motor mounts will not work either. You can go on L&L products web site and look at all the components they sell for this swap to give you ideas on what is needed and why.
I did this swap recently except I have an auto trans and I used all the L&L parts. It was very easy and the parts are great quality but they are pricey. There are cheaper ways of doing it but you will be searching for parts (for example you can use the accessary brackets from a van or you can modify the 2wd's brackets to work). Ive read on this site about others going this route but I didnt fool with it. You should be able to find dozens of posts on this topic to read. Good luck with your swap. Imo, its well worth the effort.
all your brackets will work fine.you should be able to find a bracket from two engines to work for what ever,use your imagination.use the lower motor mount perches from the 78 and get upper motor mounts for a 73 460.you may have to change pan.if your front tranny houseing unbolts then you can change the bell housing to a 460 that way you can use proper balance with a 460 fly wheel.some say the tranny will bolt,it depends ive seen some bolt up to the big block and others wont,i think it depends on when and where the truck is made.good luck with your swap would love to see pictures
thank you for the info. i am still unclear on the accessary bracket part. are you guys say thing like to power steering pump are going to be to low?? if so what is it that they are going to hit?
i will be checking out l&l for more info, thanks again.
this is what the 78/79 4wd frame are supposed to go..highlighted in red
this is the 78 460 2wd style w/ x member
you can see how the lower mounting point as well as the upper mounting point for the 2wd 460 brackets are totally different...IF it is going to fit, you may have to utilize your 76 towers and come w/ some adaption for the motor mounts ...but the 2wd stuff won't be of any use
